چکیده

Soil organic C or organic matter has been studied under various plant communities. In comparisons of similar soils having either grassland or forest vegetation, surface horizons of the forest soil may have lower levels of soil C (Ugolini and Schlichte, 1973; Almendinger, 1990) or higher levels (Jenny, 1980). Even between forest types, soil C may vary. Alban (1982) found the forest floor in a Populus tremuloides stand had 1040% less organic matter than in Picea glauca, Pinus resinosa or Pinus banksiana stands of the same age. Suface soil (0-5 inches) in a Picea abies forest had a significantly higher concentration of organic matter than did the soil from Quercus rubra or Pinus strobus (Challinor, 1968). In comparisons of Pinus radiata and eucalyptus forests in Australia, Turner and Kelly (1985) found higher concentrations of C in the surface mineral soil of one pine plantation at only one of two sites. In another P. radiata eucalyptus comparison, Turner and Lambert (1988) found greater soil C in a pine plantation in a low-fertility site, but less soil C in a high-fertility site.

Belowground carbon pools and processes in different age stands of Douglas-fir.

Forest floor material and soil organic matter may act as both a source and a sink in global CO2 cycles. Thus, the ecosystem processes controlling these pools are central to understanding the transfers of carbon (C) between the atmosphere and terrestrial systems. To examine these ecosystem processes, the effect of stand age on temporal carbon source-sink relationships was examined in 20-year-old...

Spatial extent of impact of red alder on soil chemistry of adjacent conifer stands

RHOADES, C.C., and BINKLEY, D. 1992. Spatial extent of impact of red alder on soil chemistry of adjacent conifer stands. Can. J. For. Res. 22: 1434-1437. We examined patterns in soil N availability and pH along transects extending from mixed stands of conifers (mostly Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco)) and red alder (A/nus rubra Bong.) to pure conifer stands at two locations. A...

Community composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea in soils under stands of red alder and Douglas fir in Oregon.

This study determined nitrification activity and nitrifier community composition in soils under stands of red alder (Alnus rubra) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) at two sites in Oregon. The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, has low net N mineralization and gross nitrification rates. Cascade Head Experimental Forest, in the Coast Range, has hig...

Variation in water potential, hydraulic characteristics and water source use in montane Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine trees in southwestern Alberta and consequences for seasonal changes in photosynthetic capacity.

Tree species response to climate change-induced shifts in the hydrological cycle depends on many physiological traits, particularly variation in water relations characteristics. We evaluated differences in shoot water potential, vulnerability of branches to reductions in hydraulic conductivity, and water source use between Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm. (lodgepole pine) a...

Mechanisms of Negative Impacts of Three Forest Treatments on Nutrient Availability

Many forest management treatments are directly aimed at maintaining or enhancing forest productivity. There may also be secondary effects that detract from this goal. We discuss three case studies in Washington state in which several mechanisms may have led to adverse secondary impacts. In the first study, pulp and paper (PII) sludges were mixed into soil and growth of Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga ...
